What's Included in Preventive Dentistry
Dental Checkups & Cleanings

The American Dental Association recommends that patients see a dentist every six months for routine checkups and cleanings. These visits play a critical role in making sure that teeth and gums stay healthy against harmful bacteria.

During this appointment, Dr. Nick Smith will inspect your mouth for any signs of trouble. If he notices something, we’ll get right to work to fix it before it advances into a more serious problem. In addition, we will perform a thorough cleaning of your teeth to help stop future issues in their tracks.

Nightguards for Bruxism

If you clench or grind your teeth at night (a condition called bruxism), you may wake up with jaw pain or headaches, or have excessive wear on your teeth. Dr. Nick Smith can provide a custom-made oral appliance that protects your teeth from bruxism and all the unpleasant symptoms that come with it.

This comfortable appliance separates the top and bottom teeth during sleep, preventing friction and even perhaps leading to better sleep and less stress in your jaw.

Oral Cancer Screenings

Did you know that oral cancer is the sixth most common cancer in the United States? It doesn’t just impact heavy smokers or drinkers, and it is often discovered too late. That’s why regular screenings for this particular type of cancer are crucial.

Dr. Nick Smith can recognize the early signs of oral cancer, increasing the odds of overcoming the disease. He performs a screening at each checkup appointment so you can find it as early as possible. This simple, yet important, service helps to keep you healthy for many years.

Fluoride Treatments

Your tooth enamel is the strongest, hardest substance in the human body, but it is not indestructible. In fact, your teeth are under almost constant attack by acid-producing bacteria in your mouth.

To finish your semi-annual visit with our team, we can apply a concentrated treatment of fluoride onto your teeth. This mineral is proven to strengthen enamel and help prevent cavities in between dental checkup and cleaning appointments. Make sure you get this treatment before you leave!

Children's Dentistry

At Dr. Nick Smith’s practice, we welcome patients of all ages, including young children. Our staff has years of experience and knows how to help your little one feel at ease in the dentist’s chair.

Our gentle touch and friendly service will help your child have positive dental experiences that encourage lifelong oral health. For rarer complex cases, we may need to refer you to a trusted specialist, but we’ll make sure that they are just as devoted to excellence as we are.

Periodontal Therapy

Your gums and supporting tissue provide the foundation for good oral health and a strong smile. About 80% of the population has some form of gum disease, and most don’t even know it.

During your checkup, we will evaluate the health of your gums. If you have periodontal problems, we may use soft tissue laser therapy to get rid of the infection and restore your gums to full health. Other treatments include scaling and root planing — procedures that remove bacteria below and above the gum line and help ensure that gum disease won’t come back again.
